Joseph John Flores Sr. was a remarkable man who never made an enemy. He was a simple man who liked life’
s simple pleasures. He would choose beans and rice over a steak dinner. He called everybody “baby” and loved
wearing baseball hats. He loved fishing, watching sports, and tinkering with things that appeared to be
completely broken. Joe loved sweets and hated chicken. He enjoyed listening to live Mexican music and
watching Rocky movies over and over again.
Joe was an early bird and a constant promoter of whatever business his family had in motion at the time. He
adorned the caps, t-shirts jackets and passed out flyers everyday with joy. Joe had a child-like charm about him.
He yelled at the players on T.V. as if he was coaching them from his living room. Joe loved the Dallas Cowboys,
the Houston Astros, and every team that his children and grandchildren ever played on.
Joseph John Flores, Sr. had a full and complete life that was filled with unselfish acts of kindness. He was kind
to not only his family, but to complete strangers. Joe was a hard-working, kind-hearted and soft-spoken. He was
a loving father and husband. He had rough hands and a gentle touch. He had a great sense of humor and a
heart of gold. Joe would call his grandchildren names like “boo-boo,” “papa,” “lil’ mamma,” “knucklehead,”
“suckafish” “suckadee” , and crazy names that only he could think of. Joe was affectionately known to his
grandchildren as “Paw-Paw.” Joe called his wife Carmen by the nickname of “Honey” as a term of endearment;
Consequently all of his grandchildren believed that “Honey” was her real name. So she was permanently
nicknamed “Honey” to all of their grandchildren.
Joe was an active man his whole life. When Joe got sick, he was determined to fight it. Joe fought his sudden
illness with persistent courage. He never gave up. It was remarkable to see him fight.
Joe had three sisters: Anna Marie, Lorraine and Rose Marie. Joe had one baby brother named Raymond who
was by his side everyday in the hospital. Joe loved Raymond and Joe’s children love Raymond. The Flores
children will always look up to Raymond as an inspiration to family love.
Joe was 84 years old when God called him. Joe and his wife Carmen were married in 1943 and they were
married for 66 years. Joe and Carmen shared a special relationship. Carmen was Joe’s rock. His love for
Carmen was quite a sight. Carmen was the love of Joe’s life. Carmen was Joe’s best friend. Joe was preceded
in death by his parents, and a daughter in law, Leslie Flores.
Joe is survived by his wife of 66 years Carmen Cruz Flores; a brother, Raymond and wife Connie; three sisters,
Anna Marie, Lorraine and Rose Marie. Joe and Carmen have five children and their spouses: Joe Jr. and Diane,

area.  He joined the Coast Guard during World War II and served his country by patrolling the coast to protect
against enemy submarines and ships at sea.  After leaving the service in 1945, he disembarked at Galveston
and the very next day was hired by the City of Galveston in the Typhus Control Program.  Many people nicknamed
Reid as the “Rat Man” because of his extensive knowledge of rats.  He was responsible for rodent-proofing
buildings on the Strand and Seawall Blvd.  He was promoted to other duties such as restaurant inspections and
was eventually promoted to Chief Sanitarian and continued to perform those duties until he retired from the City
of Galveston.  He went to work in the same position with the Galveston County Health District until he retired in
1990 as Chief Sanitarian.  Overall, he served the citizens of Galveston County for a total of 45 years.  He was
instrumental in mentoring a large number of health inspectors statewide and most are still working around the
state of Texas.  Reid enjoyed life and loved to be around his friends.  He once said “once a sanitarian always a
sanitarian” and most owners of restaurants in the city of Galveston respected his ability to communicate with
them and his professionalism.

                                                        Jane Susanna Duffy Schlankey
GALVESTON:  Jane Susanna Duffy Schlankey joined family and friends in heaven on Friday, April 30, 2010 at
John Sealy Hospital in Galveston.  Her passing is grieved by those of us who knew and loved her during her
long life. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 am Saturday, May 8, 2010 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church,
Father E. J. Stein, OFM celebrant. A reception will follow the service at 1611 Driftwood Lane in Galveston.
Born June 11, 1923, to Susanna Dolson Duffy and Hugh Duffy in Brooklyn, New York, Jane grew up in
Larchmont, New York.  Her mother was originally from Galveston, so Jane made several trips to the island
to visit the Dolson clan and extended family.  On one of those trips, Jane met Joe Schlankey.  Ten years
later, the two met again in Galveston, and later married in New York.  They made their home in Galveston,
raising a family and making many friends.
Jane became involved in the Varsity Club, the League of Women Voters, and attended St. Patrick's Catholic
Church.  She and Joe joined the Bayou Club, remaining active members until the club was sold in the
1990s.  It was in all of these settings that Jane made the friends that she remained close to all of her life.
Her sense of humor, her intelligence and her caring nature brought her the love and fun that she enjoyed
during her time here on earth.
Jane and Joe raised four children.  Jane began attending St. Peter's Catholic Church from its inception, and
continued to play an active role in that church.  She served on the pastoral council and in the choir; she acted
as a sponsor for a number of communicants in the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults; and she managed
rentals of St. Peter's Parish Hall.  After experiencing breast cancer, Jane volunteered for the American
Cancer Society's Reach to Recovery Program, giving back what she had learned after her mastectomy.
For many years, Jane played bridge avidly several times a week.  She enjoyed the game and enjoyed the
companionship of her bridge friends even more.  She will be sorely missed by those with whom she played
and visited over the years.
After Joe's death in June 1990, Jane continued life with the same vitality, but without her best friend and
partner.  It was this loss, and several bouts with cancer, that tested Jane in the coming years.  Her faith, her
friends and her family, along with her own strength of character, carried her forward, allowing her to relish
her remaining years.
Jane leaves a grieving family, including brother Hugh Duffy of Vieques, Puerto Rico; daughter Joan Killebrew
and her husband Charley Killebrew of Galveston; son Patrick Schlankey of Galveston; daughter Margaret
Schlankey and her husband Bill Pugsley of Austin; and daughter Susanne DeJernett and her husband Eric
DeJernett of Austin; grandchildren Benjamin Hayes of Los Angeles, Jamie Hayes and wife Brooke Hayes of
Edmond, Oklahoma, Saralin Hayes of Houston, Hannah Schlankey of Galveston, and William Pugsley of
Austin; and great-grandchildren Presley, James and Georgia Hayes of Edmond, Oklahoma.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jane's name to The Salvation Army, Our Daily Bread of
Galveston, the Women's Crisis Center of Galveston, or the charity of your choice.

                                                                           Dr. Andras Kollar
Andras Kollar, MD, PhD, was born in Budapest, Hungary, on June 24, 1958.  He died in Galveston, Texas
on May 10, 2010, after a many-year fight against cancer.  He is survived by his wife, Debbie, his father,
Ferrenc Kollar, five brothers and sisters, and four adult children, Anna, Eszter, Balint and Warren.
Dr. Kollar has been a cardio-thoracic surgeon at UTMB for the last seven years.  He recently received
tenure and was promoted to Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery.  He was also a Fellow of
the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UK and The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of
Canada.  He completed his medical training in Hungary and later in Great Britain, Germany and France.
He began his training in the United States in 1994. He served in residencies in Charlotte, North Carolina,
Buffalo, N.Y., and finally at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, where he completed his
fellowship in cardio-thoracic surgery.
Andras had several prayers.  One was answered in 2007, when he became a citizen of the United States
and could set in motion the process for his children to emigrate to the U.S. should they desire to do so.
He also wanted his life to make a difference.  He wanted to make a difference to his patients; but he also
wanted to contribute to the improvement of surgery through research and improved techniques in the
operating room.  He has pioneered a new surgical technique for repair of the aortic root--a prayer
answered.  Another prayer was to share his life and faith story.  He recently completed a draft of a
manuscript in hopes that he could publish it.  This is still to be done.
He loved to design architecture and furniture.  He and Debbie refurbished a loft in downtown Galveston,
much of the design of the apartment and the furniture being created by Andras. Most of all, Andras wanted
to be known as a faithful Christian.  He had been raised within his Catholic faith by parents that stood firm
in the midst of a Communist regime in Hungary.  He saw all of his life lived within the will of God and
under both God’s judgment and God’s grace.
His passion was to help people, to contribute to the goodness of this life, and to use his gifts in ways that
could change lives. In that same spirit, the family asks that those wishing to honor Andras may do so by
gifts in his memory to the Thoracic Surgery Foundation for Research and Education (TSFRE), 900
Cummings Center Suite #221-U, Beverly, MA 01915 or via their website https://tsfre.prri.com/donate.asp.

                                                                           Dominic Edelen
GALVESTON   Dominic Gardiner Bowling Edelen, 77, oldest son of Ignatius Gardiner Edelen, Sr., and
Marybeth Bowling Edelen of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, died peacefully in his sleep the morning of
Saturday, June 12, 2010, in Galveston, TX, following a battle with cancer.  He is survived by his wife of 55
years, Erica E. Edelen of Punta Gorda, FL, his three brothers I. Gardiner Edelen, Jr., Richard B. Edelen
and Wallace N. Edelen of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, his six children Damien Stone Pendelton Edelen,
Marybeth Bowling Edelen-Martel, Mittie-ellen Plummer Haase, Dominique Ashley Nalle Hurley, Clarissa
Waring Edelen and John Dominic Bowling Edelen, and his 11 grandchildren, who hail from points across
the United States.  Dominic is a direct descendent of Thomas Stone, a signer of the Declaration of
Independence.
Born January 3, 1933, Dom retired to Galveston in 1993 following a 25-year appointment as Professor of
Applied Mathematics at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.  Following his retirement, he
continued his exploration of mathematics and physics as an adjunct Professor at Texas A&M. Prior to his
post at Lehigh, Dom was a full professor at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, for three years,
from 1966-1969.  Before selecting the academic life, Dom worked at The Rand Corporation and Hughes
Aircraft Co., both in California, and The Martin Co. in Baltimore, Maryland.  He also lectured at the Drexel
Institute of Technology and Johns Hopkins University, his alma mater, in Baltimore.  He earned his BS,
MS and PhD. degrees from Johns Hopkins.
A brilliant mathematician, engineer and theoretical physicist, Dom has published over 177 books, papers
and monographs, with 17 titles housed in the Library of Congress. He lectured throughout the United
States, Poland, Italy, Germany, Sweden and South Africa.  Over the course of his professional life, Dom’s
mind crossed the boundaries of applied mathematics, exterior calculus, field theory, general relativity,
geometry, gauge theory, materials science and thermodynamics, and he had a fondness for the old
geometers.  Dom was forever “scribbling” as he called it, working on his theories and seeing
applications way beyond the capability of current technology. And perhaps most curiously, through his
research involving the time-space continuum, he proved that theoretically time travel is possible!
Not merely an academician, Dom loved classical music for its beauty, mathematical construction and
simplicity.  The Bach Cantatas were his favorite, but he also loved Mozart, Pachelbel and Telemann.  Not
content to listen, he played their beautiful music on the piano and organ, throughout his life and since his
retirement on the harpsichord. Most recently, he was teaching himself to play the bassoon.  He also loved
to garden, though he said the Galveston sand and salt air bedeviled him as he tried to grow his beloved
camellias.
Dom could be seen striding energetically on the seawall almost daily, with his wooden staff in hand, and
he held forth with his many friends at The Kettle, sometimes up to three times a day, pondering questions
great and small in a free-wheeling, open-ended debate to which all comers and ideas were welcome.
He used to say he never met a stranger in Galveston because he quickly befriended people from all
walks of life and those in Galveston were some of the nicest.  An avid bridge player, Dom was delighted
to learn upon moving here that he could find a foursome practically seven days a week if he so chose.  He
tried many different clubs and finally found the perfect fit at the Newcomers Club, with his favorite bridge
partner Louise Gooding.
A memorial service will be held 6 pm Thursday, June 17at Carnes Brothers Funeral Home, 1201 Tremont
St, Galveston, TX, with a reception immediately following.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in Dom’s memory to: Hospice Care Team, Inc. 1708 Amburn,
Suite C Texas City, TX  77591.
