Joseph John Flores Sr. was a remarkable man who never made an enemy. He was a simple man who liked life’
s simple pleasures. He would choose beans and rice over a steak dinner. He called everybody “baby” and loved
wearing baseball hats. He loved fishing, watching sports, and tinkering with things that appeared to be
completely broken. Joe loved sweets and hated chicken. He enjoyed listening to live Mexican music and
watching Rocky movies over and over again.
Joe was an early bird and a constant promoter of whatever business his family had in motion at the time. He
adorned the caps, t-shirts jackets and passed out flyers everyday with joy. Joe had a child-like charm about him.
He yelled at the players on T.V. as if he was coaching them from his living room. Joe loved the Dallas Cowboys,
the Houston Astros, and every team that his children and grandchildren ever played on.
Joseph John Flores, Sr. had a full and complete life that was filled with unselfish acts of kindness. He was
kind to not only his family, but to complete strangers. Joe was a hard-working, kind-hearted and soft-spoken. He
was a loving father and husband. He had rough hands and a gentle touch. He had a great sense of humor and
a heart of gold. Joe would call his grandchildren names like “boo-boo,” “papa,” “lil’ mamma,” “knucklehead,”
“suckafish” “suckadee” , and crazy names that only he could think of. Joe was affectionately known to his
grandchildren as “Paw-Paw.” Joe called his wife Carmen by the nickname of “Honey” as a term of endearment;
Consequently all of his grandchildren believed that “Honey” was her real name. So she was permanently
nicknamed “Honey” to all of their grandchildren.
Joe was an active man his whole life. When Joe got sick, he was determined to fight it. Joe fought his sudden
illness with persistent courage. He never gave up. It was remarkable to see him fight.
Joe had three sisters: Anna Marie, Lorraine and Rose Marie. Joe had one baby brother named Raymond who
was by his side everyday in the hospital. Joe loved Raymond and Joe’s children love Raymond. The Flores
children will always look up to Raymond as an inspiration to family love.
Joe was 84 years old when God called him. Joe and his wife Carmen were married in 1943 and they were
married for 66 years. Joe and Carmen shared a special relationship. Carmen was Joe’s rock. His love for
Carmen was quite a sight. Carmen was the love of Joe’s life. Carmen was Joe’s best friend. Joe was preceded

Reid Martin
GALVESTON: Reid Martin 92 of Galveston died Thursday, February 4, 2010 at Gulf Health Care Center in
Galveston. An Elk’s Memorial Service followed by the funeral service will be held at 6:30 pm Friday, February 12,
2010 at Carnes Brothers Funeral Home in Galveston.
Reid was born May 7, 1917 in Olgelsby, Texas to S.W. Martin and Nora Reid Martin and was raised in the
Waco area. He joined the Coast Guard during World War II and served his country by patrolling the coast to
protect against enemy submarines and ships at sea. After leaving the service in 1945, he disembarked at
Galveston and the very next day was hired by the City of Galveston in the Typhus Control Program. Many people
nicknamed Reid as the “Rat Man” because of his extensive knowledge of rats. He was responsible for rodent-
proofing buildings on the Strand and Seawall Blvd. He was promoted to other duties such as restaurant
inspections and was eventually promoted to Chief Sanitarian and continued to perform those duties until he
retired from the City of Galveston. He went to work in the same position with the Galveston County Health
District until he retired in 1990 as Chief Sanitarian. Overall, he served the citizens of Galveston County for a total
of 45 years. He was instrumental in mentoring a large number of health inspectors statewide and most are still
working around the state of Texas. Reid enjoyed life and loved to be around his friends. He once said “once a
sanitarian always a sanitarian” and most owners of restaurants in the city of Galveston respected his ability to
communicate with them and his professionalism.
Reid was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign War Post 880, American Legion Post 20, the
Benevolent and Protective Order of Elk’s Galveston Lodge # 126, numerous organizations associated with his
profession and a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Galveston.
Reid is preceded in death by his parents and wife Nancy. He is survived by his loving companion of 27
years, Anne M. Nigrelle of Santa Fe and children, Kenny and Becky Nigrelle and family of Hitchcock, Michael and
Jennifer Nigrelle and family of League City, and Michelle and Sammy Arcidiacono and family of Santa Fe; two
sisters Frankie Witlock of Waco, and Onita Palen of Dallas and a niece Diane Crane and family of Dallas,

somewhere.
