Anthony Michael Afonso (Tony), of Galveston, Texas, passed away on Saturday, the 6th of March 2021 surrounded by his loving wife and beautiful daughters.
Tony was born in India to Pascoal Ligorie Afonso and Rita Lena Fernandes on July 19, 1958. His mother was a principal of the local school and encouraged Tony to pursue high education goals. Tony was considered a prodigy within his hometown and went on to attend college at the young age of 16 years old.
While attending college, Tony realized his that heart belonged to the sea and developed an interest to travel. He enlisted into the United States Navy and became a American citizen. Shortly after his enlistment, Tony decided to continue traveling the world and became a merchant marine with the Military Sealift Command. His travels took him all around the world and frequently included Philippines.
In Philippines, Tony met Julieta Juan Pamandanan. They fell in love, got married, and had a daughter together. Over time, the family moved and settled into Galveston, Texas. The family also grew with two more daughters and an adopted son.
Tony was a good and hardworking man that loved and took care of his family. Tony had a mild and quiet temperament, but was a friend to everyone that he met. Through kind and soft-spoken words, Tony expressed his love and compassion to those around him.
Tony is preceded in death by both of his parents, Pascoal Ligore Afonso and Rita Lena Fernandes.
Tony is survived by his wife of 31 years, Julieta Juan Pamandanan Afonso; his daughters and son, Paula- Michelle Pamandanan Afonso, Ana Marie Afonso, Samantha Jasmine Afonso, and Ranilo Pamandanan Afonso; and his son in law, Mathew Davey Norman.
Tony's family will receive visitors beginning at 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Thursday, March 11th, at Carnes Brothers Funeral Home.
