Benito Cervantes, Jr., aka. "Benny," age 60, resident of Galveston, Texas, passed away peacefully in his sleep on the 23 rd of February 2020. His death came as an unexpected shock to his family and friends who were unaware of the seriousness of his illness.
Benny was born on the 26th of September 1959 in Weslaco, Texas. His family moved to Galveston, Texas in 1967 where he attended local schools. After graduating from Ball High School, he worked for TCI Cable Company followed by KGBC Radio Station. His biggest contribution to his community was hosting his own "Latin Music Vibrations" program on KGBC 1540 AM providing local and world news service in Spanish and promoting the best variety of Latin music. Benny was a talented musician and singer, who played keyboard for the Hermanos Cervantes Band in the late 1980s. He participated in various charities helping poor families and did minor side jobs for local businesses. Benny would be seen riding his bike while drumming with his two sticks to the beat of his loud Latin music playing on his portable speaker. He was well known for preaching the word of God from a unique personal interpretation of all the world's religions.
He was preceded in death by his loving father, Benito R. Cervantes and is survived by his grieving mother, Maria del Carmen Cervantes and 12 siblings: Marta Gonzales, Ignacia (Rodolfo) Orta, Luis J. (Inmaculada) Cervantes, Juan (Michelle) Cervantes, Lydia Cervantes, Emilio (Graciela) Cervantes, Maria del Carmen Cervantes (Karl G.H Lange), Anastacio Cervantes, San Juanita (Johnnie) Rico, Jose Ernesto (Alejandra) Cervantes, Maria Victoria Cervantes (Felipe Rodriguez), Maria Guadalupe (Joaquin) Betancourt and numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Benny will be greatly missed by all his family and friends; may his soul rest in peace.
