Galveston, TX Carol Marguerite Szanyi-Nelson 82, passed on to her heavenly reward on November 20, 2024. She was born on July 5, 1942, in Summit, New Jersey to Michael and Helen Szanyi. Carol Grew up in Galveston and attended Galveston schools. She was a 1960 graduate of Ursuline Academy. Carol was a long-time resident of Hitchcock, TX but in recent years she returned to her beloved Galveston Island. She was a dedicated member of First Lutheran Church in Galveston and a retired employee of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Carol loved Galveston Island and would share her extensive knowledge and history of the Island with anyone who was willing to listen. Carol was very proud of her Hungarian heritage and her greatest joys were spending time and cooking for her family and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Michael and Helen Szanyi; brother William (Bill) Szanyi. She is survived by her son Howard E. "Gene" Nelson Jr. (Carolyn); her daughter Sharon K. Trachtenberg (Gregor); along with her cherished grandchildren: Brooke Nelson, Nicholas Trachtenberg (Jasmin), and Alexa Rose Trachtenberg. She is also survived by her brother Gregory C. (Greg) Szanyi and wife Cindy.

There will be a Memorial Service for Carol at the First Lutheran Church in Galveston on Saturday December 21, 2024, at 11:30 a.m. with a Visitation to follow. In lieu of flowers, you may donate to Carol's favorite organization, the Christian Appalachian Project or the First Lutheran Church in Galveston, TX.
