Retired Longshoreman, Frank "Barrel" Hernandez Jr., age 68, of Galveston passed away peacefully at home after a lengthy illness surrounded by his family on Thursday, March 7, 2024. He was born on December 17, 1955, in Richmond, Texas to Frank D Hernandez and Alice Sanchez Hernandez. Frank was a proud resident of Galveston Island and a 1974 graduate of Ball High School.
Frank was employed with ILA Local 1576 and Local 20 for over 50 years and was a local union member.
As an active member in the community, Frank volunteered and enjoyed coaching basketball through the Galveston Boys Club and the Galveston Little Dribblers Basketball League. He was also a baseball coach for the Galveston Little League – East End and enjoyed playing men's softball with the Mexican American Softball League with the team "La Familia". Frank's kind heart was no stranger to helping those in need, whether it was family or a perfect stranger, he was always ready and willing without hesitation.
Frank was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Alice S Hernandez, his sisters Alice Perez and Susie Hernandez. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Irma D Hernandez of Galveston. His sons, Frank "Chacho" Hernandez III and Gabriel Hernandez both of Galveston. His daughter Angela D Ellison and husband Joseph P Ellison of Pensacola, Florida and his 3 beautiful grandchildren Jacob, Angel, and Evangelina Ellison also of Pensacola, Florida. His sisters, Irene Pena of Deer Park, Elizabeth Hughes of Texas City, and Margaret Leyva, Joan Palomo, and Lucy Moreno all of Galveston. Along with numerous family members and long-time friend (and brother) Natividad "Chuco" Galicia.
Memorial Services for Frank will be held on Wednesday, March 13 , 2024, at 5:30pm at Carnes Brothers Funeral Home in Galveston and visitation will begin at 4:00 pm.
