Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gregorio "Goyo" Martinez, who departed this life on May 6, 2025, just three days shy of his 85th birthday. Born on May 9, 1940, in Galveston, Texas, Goyo was a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and treasured memories that will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him.

Goyo was the beloved son of Cenobio Sr. and Demetria Martinez, and he experienced the profound sorrow of losing his sister, Janie Magallion, and his brothers, Angelo, Manuel Sr., and Roberto Martinez Sr., who preceded him in death. Despite these losses, Goyo's spirit remained strong, and his compassion for others never wavered.

In 1964, Goyo married his one true love, Maria Anita, with whom he shared an enduring bond for 61 beautiful years. Together, they built a life filled with joy and devotion, welcoming into the world three sons, Gregorio Martinez Jr., Danny Martinez Sr. (Melissa), and Michael Martinez Sr. (Amanda), along with a daughter, Nita Phillips (James). Goyo was immensely proud of his family, which also includes his loving sisters, Rosie Guzman, Esther Rodriguez (Manuel), Linda Galicia, and his brother, Cenobio Martinez Jr. He was a proud grandfather to eleven grandchildren and a great-grandfather to nine great-grandchildren, all of whom adored him and will carry forward his spirit.

Goyo dedicated over 30 years of his life to Amoco Oil Refinery, where he worked diligently as a pipefitter. His commitment to his profession was a testament to his work ethic and determination, qualities that he passed on to his children. He was an avid sports fan, with a particular fondness for football, passionately supporting the Houston Oilers and later the Texans. Boxing matches were another favored pastime, where he would cheer enthusiastically for his favorite fighters.

Family gatherings were a hallmark of Goyo's life. He delighted in hosting barbecues and creating joyful memories with his loved ones, always surrounded by the warmth of family and friends. His laughter and kindness made every gathering special, sharing special stories, laughter and love.

Goyo's life will be celebrated in a rosary service on Monday, May 12, 2025, at 6:30pm at Carnes Brothers Funeral Home, where family and friends are invited to honor his memory and share the impact he made in their lives. The funeral Vigil will be held 11:00am Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at the funeral home with burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery. He will be lovingly remembered as a devoted husband, a proud father, and a doting grandfather, whose love transcended generations.

As we bid farewell to our dear Goyo, we take solace in knowing that he lives on in the hearts of all who loved him. His legacy will continue through his family and the lives he touched.

In honor of Gregorio "Goyo" Martinez, his pallbearers will be Greg Martinez, Danny Martinez Sr., Mike Martinez Sr., James Phillips, Danny Martinez Jr., and Stephen Martinez and Cenobio Martinez.

Rest in peace, Goyo. Your spirit will guide us, and your love will remain a beacon in our lives forever.
