Galveston
In Loving Memory of
Herbert Louis Alvey, Jr.
April 9, 1938 – September 16, 2026
Herbert Louis Alvey, Jr. was born on April 9, 1938, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to his loving parents, Herbert Louis Alvey, Sr. and Martha. From his early years, Herb developed a love for sports, service, faith, and the relationships that would shape his life.
He graduated from Southport High School in 1956, where he excelled in athletics and participated in basketball, baseball, football, handball, and other school activities. He was also involved in the Lettermen's Club, Drivers Club, Booster Club, and Outdoor Life Club. These experiences helped create lasting friendships and cherished memories.
At the age of 21, Herb answered the call to ministry in the Apostolic faith. He followed in his father's footsteps and took over his father's church, serving faithfully in ministry until another calling led him into a career in law enforcement.
In September 1966, at the age of 28, Herb joined the Indianapolis Police Department. He dedicated himself to serving and protecting his community, building a distinguished career that continued until his retirement in 2003. His commitment to service reflected his sense of responsibility and devotion to others.
In 1978, Herb met the love of his life, Norma. Their relationship grew into a lasting partnership, and in 1991, they were united in marriage. Together, they shared a life filled with love, companionship, and memorable adventures.
Herb and Norma enjoyed traveling and exploring beautiful destinations, including Oakland, California, Cancun, Mexico, Hawaii, the Virgin Islands, and Las Vegas. Their travels provided opportunities to experience new places and create treasured memories together. Following Herbert's retirement in 2003, the couple relocated to Galveston, Texas, where they continued their life together.
Herb will be remembered for his faith, his dedication to ministry and public service, his love of athletics, and his devotion to family. He touched the lives of those around him through the many roles he embraced as a husband, family member, minister, and police officer.
On September 16, 2026, Herbert Louis Alvey, Jr. peacefully departed this life in Galveston, Texas. His journey on earth came to an end, but the love he shared, the service he gave, and the memories he created will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, and elder sister, Lucille.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Norma; stepchildren, Mark Bacon, Bryant Bacon, Charles Phelps, Shirell Phelps; grandchildren Emerson Phelps, Charlyse Phelps, and Austin Bacon; and nephew, Ken Marshall, and his wife, Louann. He is also lovingly remembered by extended family, dear friends, and all those whose lives he touched throughout his years.
Though he may be absent from our sight, his love, his legacy, and the memories he created will remain with us forever.
May he rest in eternal peace.
