Ioannis Aretis, age 83, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his loved ones, on June 30, 2026.
Born on March 15, 1943, in Thessaloniki, Greece, Ioannis proudly served his country in the Hellenic (Greek) Armed Forces prior to immigrating to the United States. During his military service, he was stationed in both Athens and Cyprus, an experience that remained a source of pride throughout his life.

In 1974, Ioannis made Galveston, Texas, his home, where he built a life centered on family, faith, and friendship. Although he always held Greece close to his heart and visited when he could, he was unable to make one final visit to his homeland after becoming ill.

Ioannis was a devoted member of Assumption Greek Orthodox Church and a proud member of AHEPA George Marinos Chapter #276. He found his greatest joy in spending time with family and friends, creating lasting memories with those he loved. He was known for his warm smile, generous spirit, and love of dancing and fishing. Whether gathered around the table with loved ones, casting a fishing line, or dancing at family celebrations, Ioannis embraced life with enthusiasm and shared that joy with everyone around him.

He is survived by his loving children, Nafsika Flores (Alfonso) and George Aretis; his cherished grandchildren, Alex, Amalia, Yannis, Skylor, and Olivia; his lifelong companion, Juanita Cruz; and his beloved bonus daughters, Vicki, Laura, Kelly, Pamela, and Victoria. He also leaves behind his siblings in Greece: Aleka (Christos), Alekos (Nitsa), and Maria (Ioannis), along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and countless friends whose lives were enriched by knowing him.

Ioannis was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Nafsika and Georgos Aretis, and his sister, Elizabeth Aretis.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 10, 2026, at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 714 19th Street, Galveston, Texas 77550. The family will receive friends beginning at 9:00 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. A procession to Calvary Cemetery, 2506 65th Street, Galveston, Texas 77551, will immediately follow.

Following the burial service, the family warmly invites all relatives and friends to return to Assumption Greek Orthodox Church for a reception to celebrate the life, legacy, and memories of Ioannis Aretis.

Though he will be deeply missed, Ioannis's kindness, unwavering love for his family, strong faith, and joyful spirit will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
