Surrounded by his loving wife of 67 years, and his family, John Richard Garcia passed away peacefully at home and into the arms of our Lord on Sunday, July 19, 2026. Richard, as he was known, was Born On Island April 7, 1934, to Julio Y. Garcia and Josephine Gonzales Garcia; later Josephine Gonzales Quiroga.

Richard served in the U.S. Army from June 1956 to June 1958, at which time he was Honorably Discharged. During his time in the Army, his rank was Private First Class, and he was stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington, as part of Battery E, 2nd Howitzer Battalion, 1st Artillery. He was very proud of his service to our country.

Soon after returning to Galveston, Richard met the woman who would become the love of his life, Victoria Prieto Compean. They married on May 23, 1959, in Rosenberg, Texas, where they raised a family of two sons, and two daughters. Richard worked for the Galveston Coca-Cola Bottling Company as a route salesman until its operations were moved to Houston. After working for Coca-Cola, he worked for the City of Galveston until his retirement. Richard and Victoria loved to dance, raise their children and travel the world with their children.

Having worked in local bowling alleys as a pin setter prior to the invention of automatic pin setting machines and joining the Army, Richard was a highly skilled bowler. He won numerous trophies for his bowling skills and taught those skills to his sons and grandchildren. Richard coached his sons in Little League Baseball for the Schreiber and Miller Little League Baseball team and served as a Scout Master when they joined the Boy Scouts. He enjoyed teaching baseball skills to his grandsons and attended their baseball games as they grew up. He doted over his daughters and participated in their major life events such as their weddings, and those of his Grandchildren. He was always there to support his daughters in whatever activities they were involved. He was extremely proud of his grandchildren and participated in helping raise them and being part of their activities. He was also extremely proud of his great grandchildren and was active in supporting their activities.

Richard is preceded in death by his parents, Stepfather Jose Angel Quiroga (his Dad) and Josephine Gonzales Quiroga; brothers and sisters William "Bill" Quiroga, Roger "Bo" Quiroga, Mercedes Garcia Guerrero, Mary Garcia Morales, Guadelupe Garcia Doreck, Viola Quiroga, Dorothy Quiroga and Yolanda Quiroga; and daughter in law Marlynn Burgess Garcia.

Richard is survived by his wife, Victoria Compean Garcia, his sons John Michael Garcia, Mark Anthony Garcia and his wife Rayette Granger Garcia, his daughters Katherine Ann Ofczarzak and her husband Darrell Ofczarzak, Carolyn Sue Garcia and her husband Steven Gehret; his grandchildren, Delmar Berndt and wife Amy, Bryan Smith and wife Lauren, Kriss Garcia and wife Brittany, Cari Moore and husband Daniel, Matthew Mendoza, Kyler Ofczarzak, Jacob Gehret, Victoria Gehret; and his great grandchildren, Aiden Moore, Luke Moore, Hunter Clement, Landon Exner, Bristol Garcia, and Makinley Moore.

Richard is also survived by his brothers and sister; Edward Garcia, Joe Quiroga, Jr., David Quiroga and wife Julie, and Gypsy Quiroga, all from Galveston; C.L. "Butch" Quiroga and wife Bonnie from Bayou Vista, and George Quiroga and wife Genia from Houston.

Pallbearers will be Delmar Berndt, Bryan Smith, Kriss Garcia, Matthew Mendoza, Kyler Ofczarzak, and Frank Garcia, his nephew. Honorary Pallbearer is Robert Kegresse.

All funeral services will be held at Carnes Brothers Funeral Home, 1201 Tremont, Galveston, Texas. The viewing will be held Tuesday, July 28, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary at 6:30 p.m. The funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 29, 2026, with a viewing from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., followed by a service from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The funeral procession will leave Galveston, and the entombment will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery located at 7801 Gulf Freeway, Dickinson, Texas 77539. A reception will follow in Galveston in the Denardo Hall of the Holy Family Parish Offices located at 1525 25th St., Galveston, Texas 77550.
