Jose "Pepe" Ortiz, Sr., peacefully departed this life Wednesday, February 21, 2024, at his home in Galveston in the presence of his family. Born on July 10, 1932, in Galveston, Texas, to Jose and Andrea Gallardo Ortiz, Pepe leaves behind a legacy of dedication, love, and unwavering commitment.

A devoted family man, Pepe cherished his loved ones above all else. He was preceded in death by his dear wife, Janie Medina Ortiz, and his sister, Antonia Ortiz Copado. Pepe is survived by his brother, Jesse Ortiz of Oceanside, CA, his beloved son, Jose Ortiz, Jr., his granddaughter, Annalis Ortiz Wilson (Marc Wilson), his grandsons, JoeAngelo Ortiz (Lucy McEldowney), Marc Ortiz (Angel Alcocer), and Angel Ortiz; as well as his great-grandchildren, Jordan Dreiss Ortiz, Kayne Ortiz, Angelo Ortiz, Isabella Ortiz, Arianna Ortiz, and Major Wilson.

Throughout his life, Pepe embodied the values of hard work and perseverance. For many years, he lent his skill as a welder to Todd's Shipyard. Even after retiring from Todd's in 1989, Pepe's passion for industry led him back to the workforce, this time at UTMB, where he continued to contribute until his second retirement in 1995. Yet, retirement never truly suited Pepe, who found solace and fulfillment in his work around the house and in his many hobbies.

Pepe had a profound love for music, discovering a passion for playing the bongos and tambourine, with friends in a local band. His rhythm and joy for life resonated through every beat, bringing smiles to all who knew him. But above all, Pepe cherished his family. His devotion to his late wife, Janie Medina Ortiz, and his children and grandchildren knew no bounds.

In addition to his dedication to work and family, Pepe found spiritual nourishment in his faith. A devout Catholic, he found solace and community in the pews of Sacred Heart Church and later at St. Patrick's Church. Sundays were not only for worship but also for rallying behind his beloved Houston Texans, showcasing his unwavering loyalty and spirit. Pepe's industrious spirit was ever-present, whether he was tinkering in his garage or spending quality time with his son, Jose Ortiz, Jr. Their bond was unbreakable, a testament to Pepe's capacity for love and care. His legacy of hard work, familial devotion, and love for music will forever resonate in the hearts of those who knew him.

The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to Pepe's niece, Rachel Copado, for her devoted care, especially in his final days.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, February 25th, from 5-8 pm at Carnes Brothers Funeral Home in Galveston, TX, with a rosary recitation at 6:30 pm. The funeral service will take place on Monday, February 26th, at 11 am. The burial will follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Galveston, TX.

Pepe will be laid to rest by pallbearers Jose Ortiz, Jr., Joe Angelo Ortiz, Marc Ortiz, Angel Ortiz, Jordan Dreiss Ortiz, Manuel Moreno, and Roy Gonzales. Kayne Ortiz and Angelo Ortiz will serve as honorary pallbearers.

As we bid farewell to Pepe, let us carry forward his legacy of hard work, love, and joy, ensuring that his spirit lives on eternally. May he rest in peace, knowing he was loved and cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
