GALVESTON: Lloyd A Kelley, 88, of Galveston Texas passed away on May 18, 2019. There will be a celebration of life May 24, 2019 from 3-6 p.m. at Carnes Brothers Funeral home in Galveston.

Lloyd Kelley was born in Houston on September 1, 1930 to Ernest Leroy and Addie Belle Kelley.  Lloyd is survived by his sister Doris Johnson of Houston, daughter Karen Green and husband Randy of Gardnerville, Nevada, son Kyle A. Kelley and wife Linda of Galveston; grandchildren, Kelley, Kaycee, Amanda and husband John, Angela and wife Natalie, Alanna and husband Kyle; great-grandchildren, Tyler, Aniyah, Gabriel and Sophia; nieces and nephews, Pam, Sherry, Wayne, Ray, better known as "Monk", Belinda and Penny; and a host of great nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents Ernest and Addie, twin brother Floyd Kelley and brother Roy Kelley.

Lloyd was known as Coach Kelley to many, but more affectionately as Papa Lloyd to most.

Lloyd graduated from Aldine High School where he excelled in football. He attended Sam Houston State Teachers College, lettering 4 times in football and 3 times in track. After College he accepted a job which was offered over a payphone and hitchhiked to Barbers Hill where his coaching career began. His career at Barbers Hill spanned from 1953 to 1967.  He led the Barbers Hill's football team to a spectacular record of 121-19-2, including 5 regional championships teams and a 33 game winning streak. Lloyd also coached the Barbers Hill track team and led them to a State Championship win in 1956. In recognition of his accomplishments, in 2016, Barbers Hill dedicated a new sports complex and named it "The Lloyd Kelley Multi-Purpose Practice Building". Coach Kelley still holds the record of Barbers Hills "Winning-est coach in history."

Lloyd's coaching career continued on when he accepted the Athletic Director position at Galveston College where he served from 1967-1983. He taught many classes including sailing, swimming, scuba diving, baseball and basketball. The house where he resided on Biovu was used to teach college water sports and host many of the college's back to school events. You could always find students taking advantage of the water way right outside his backyard. He treated each of his students with kindness and respect and in return he received the same.  His life-long friends can attest; when you became a friend of Lloyd's, it was for life.

Lloyd retired to Canyon Lake in 1983 where he remained until a bout with cancer in 2003, which he beat.  In 2005, he decided to move back to Galveston to be closer to his son and daughter-in-law.

Lloyd remained active by caring for the chickens, dogs, cat and horses. He enjoyed mowing, riding the neighborhood in his golf cart and chatting with anyone and everyone as he never met a stranger.

Lloyd will be truly missed by all who knew him.
