Remembering Margie Bell Davis Phelps

Margie Bell Davis Phelps, born December 20, 1924, in Kilgore, Texas daughter of Oscar & Francis Davis. She attended public school in her hometown of Kilgore, graduating from North Chapel High school. After graduation, Margie attended Prairie View A&M College and later, Texas College where she met and later married, the late Cleotha Lee Phelps.

Margie and family relocated to Houston, Texas in 1953. She was employed with the U.S. Postal Service for over 25 years. After retirement, she became actively involved in numerous community organizations. She served as the Republican Party Judge for Precinct 398. She was a member of the Concerned Women of America National Prayer Committee; she was a member of the NAACP, the local and- National Assault on Illiteracy Program, and the Mother's March on Birth Defects (commonly known as the March of Dimes). Margie served as a former Vice President of Retired Federal Employees, founder and former president of Northeast Positive Interaction Program (P.I.P.), former board member of Gulf Coast Community Services, member of Harris County Council of Organizations, member of Texas College Alumni (focusing on student recruitment and scholarship fundraising), and on various school and non-profits boards.

Margie's volunteer work in Houston brought her many honors and recognitions from our city leaders. Among them were Kay Bailey Hutchinson Recognition for Outstanding Service; Harris County Precinct 3 for Outstanding Volunteer, Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition; recognitions from the Office of Council Member John W. Peavy: City Council Member Carol Mims Galloway; and Council Member Michael J. Yarbrough; recognition from the office of Council Member Felix Fraga for Outstanding Tutorial Services; Certificate of Citations awarded by State Representative Ron Wilson and State Repre­sentative Garnet F. Coleman; recognition for outstanding contributions from Harris County Commissioner El Franco Lee for the program "Self-Enhancing Literacy Fundamentals"; honored by Texas Peace Officers Association; Certificate of Appreciation from the Houston Police Department-Northeast Division; and recog­nized with a City of Houston proclamation from the Office of Mayor Kathy Whitmire acknowledging October 23, 1982 as "Mrs. Margie Phelps Day". These were just some of the honors and awards that she received.

Margie accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior through a friendship with a "forever friend". In her Christian journey, Margie became a fervent prayer warrior. She participated in two prayer groups lifting up prayers both early morning and late evening. Margie was also a student of the Word of God. She modeled her convictions in her everyday life and taught women Sunday school classes and women Mission groups.

She was one of the first new members of Kashmere Gardens MBC. After moving to a different part of town, she became a faithful member of Green Grove Baptist Church under Pastor Johnny Calvin Hooker, and later united with Internal Hope Fellowship Church (IHFC) under the pastoral leadership of her son-in-law, George E. Burrell, Sr. She was honored by the IHFC's Earth's Angels Conference as a Titus Woman and received "Distinguished Hope Honoree" for her ministry to mature and young women giving guidance, support, encouragement, and wisdom. She served faithfully at IHFC until her health failed.

Everyone knew Margie loved to bake. Anyone tasting her pies would agree they were the best, with a crust that could not be matched anywhere this side of heaven, she was indeed, "The Pie Lady"! She enjoyed traveling and had the opportunity to travel to several countries across the globe.

On February 3, 2022 Margie D. Phelps, fondly called "Granny", passed away into the presence of her Lord. She is preceded in death by her husband, Cleotha Lee Phelps; son, Donald L. Phelps and granddaughter, Katrina Hosea. She leaves to cherish her memories and to continue the journey of faith:

George Brooks, T'Aliyah, D'Angelo, Tobias, Me'Chelle, Tyler, Ryann Nicole and Skye. Along with nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends.
