Martha "Edith" Gundermann Leras, a beloved mother, grandmother, and cherished member of the Galveston community, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 22, 2025, at Jennie Sealy Hospital in Galveston, at the age of 89.

Born on January 29, 1936, in Galveston to Frederick and Carmen Gundermann, Edith lived a life filled with love, family, and creativity. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, finding immense joy in caring for and providing for her loved ones. Her culinary skills were legendary, and her home was always filled with the delicious aromas of her cooking. Edith possessed a remarkable artistic talent, expressing herself through various arts and crafts. Each Christmas season, she transformed her home into a winter wonderland, a testament to her festive spirit and dedication to creating beautiful memories for her family. Her love extended to her beloved pets, particularly her prize-winning poodles.

Edith was preceded in death by her parents, Frederick and Carmen Gundermann; her son, Rodney Norman Leras; her grandson, Justin Matthew Allen Banuelos; her brother, Freddy Gundermann II; and her sisters, Virginia Gundermann and Marie Gundermann.

She is survived by her children: Karlis Leras, Jr., Bonnie Leras Salassi, Rose Leras Harper, Kenneth Charles Leras, Robert Glenn Leras, Irene Mitchell, and Angela Grainge; brother, Harold Gundermann and numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who will deeply miss her warmth, generosity, and unwavering love.

A memorial service celebrating Edith's life will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at Carnes Brothers Funeral Home in Galveston. Visitation will begin at 1:00 PM the same day. All who knew and loved Edith are welcome to attend and share their memories. Edith will be remembered for her kind heart, her artistic spirit, and the enduring love she shared with her family and friends. She will be deeply missed.
