Michael C. Morgan, 73

Illinois native, world adventurer, award-winning orchid horticulturalist

Whether scuba diving off the coast of Hawaii's Big Island, trekking through Borneo in search of rare orchids, or pursuing a rare vintage wine in Austria, Michael C. Morgan embraced life as a grand adventure. Guided by an abiding Christian faith, a deep love of family, and an insatiable curiosity about the natural world, he lived with purpose, wonder, and generosity of spirit. Michael passed away peacefully at home on March 11, 2026, at the age of 73, diagnosed with cancer two years prior and three and a half years after moving to Galveston, Texas.

Born April 12, 1952, in suburban Cook County, Illinois, Mike was the eldest of seven children of Edward F. Morgan Jr. and Sally (Salay) Morgan. He was raised in Wheaton (IL), where his family life was shaped by faith, learning, and close-knit bonds. Their distinctive family home—nicknamed "Kandahar," inspired by a Vermont ski lodge—became a gathering place filled with warmth, lively conversation, and shared traditions that endured for decades.

From an early age, Mike displayed a remarkable fascination with the natural world. His childhood curiosity blossomed into a lifelong passion for science, especially biology and botany. Whether building a homemade geyser in the basement, launching model rockets, or studying animal skulls for a science competition, he approached learning with creativity and enthusiasm. That same spirit of inquiry would later define both his professional pursuits and his hobbies.

A graduate of Wheaton Academy (IL), Mike studied biology at Northern Illinois University, where his interest in botany deepened into a specialized passion for orchids and plant physiology. His passion helped convince his father to build a small greenhouse, which housed an extraordinary collection of orchids and tropical plants. It was there that Mike began developing the expertise that would eventually earn him an award-winning reputation as an orchid grower.

Mike's love of adventure extended far beyond the classroom. Beginning with early family travels across Europe, he developed a lifelong appreciation for other cultures, landscapes, and ecosystems. His journeys would later take him to Japan, Belize, Ecuador, Borneo, and beyond—often combining scientific study with exploration. These travels reflected not only his intellectual curiosity but also his sense of awe for God's creation.

His academic path was as rich and varied as his interests. Mike earned a Master of Science in Botany from the University of Wyoming, where he met his future wife, Leslie. The two were married in October 1983 and shared a life grounded in faith, partnership, and mutual curiosity. Mike also pursued theological study, earning a Master of Arts in Religion (MAR) in Biblical Studies at Philadelphia's Westminster Seminary, reflecting a deep and enduring commitment to Christian thought and service. He later completed an MBA, bringing together his scientific, spiritual, and entrepreneurial pursuits.

In Chicago, Mike worked as a trader at the Chicago Board of Trade while he and Leslie enjoyed city life, including time on Lake Michigan aboard their boat. Yet it was back in Wheaton where Mike's passion for orchids truly flourished. As the founder of his own orchid-growing business, he became widely respected for his skill, knowledge, and artistry. He cultivated an extraordinary collection and earned numerous best-of-class awards across the Midwest and beyond. His greenhouse and home became a place of fascination and delight—especially for his many nieces and nephews—filled with orchids, tropical birds, fossils, fine wines, and treasured curiosities.

Mike's life was anchored in Christian faith. A seminary-trained believer, he lived out his convictions through active involvement in church communities, including later years at Galveston Bible Church. His faith was not only theological but deeply personal, shaping his character, relationships, and outlook on life.

Family remained central to Mike's life. From large Fourth of July gatherings at Kandahar—complete with a custom-built rotisserie—to quiet moments of shared discovery, he cherished time with his siblings, extended family, and especially his beloved wife, Leslie. Their partnership was marked by devotion, resilience, and shared adventure.

In later years, Mike and Leslie relocated to Galveston, Texas, where he underwent cancer treatment. Even in illness, he faced life with courage and faith, ultimately choosing to spend his final days at home under hospice care.

Mike is survived by his wife, Leslie (Wagner) Morgan; his siblings Elizabeth Morgan Jones (Perry), Timothy Morgan (J. Senja); Marianne Morgan Petersen (Chris); Daniel Morgan (Evonne); Jonathan Morgan; and Eric Morgan (Afarin); first cousin David Keck, and a large extended family of nieces, nephews, and others. He was preceded in death by his parents and a niece.

A man of boundless curiosity, steadfast faith, and generous love, Michael C. Morgan leaves behind a legacy rooted in wonder—for God's creation, for the beauty of the natural world, and for the people he held dear.

Carnes Brothers Funeral Home in Galveston, Texas, is handling arrangements. The interment will take place in Wyoming, and memorial details will be announced at a later date.
