Odessie Lea 'Shangy' Voight

Shangy Voight, 86, passed peacefully on December 24th, 2020 in Texas City, TX. She was the widow of Archiebald Lee 'Buddy' Voight Jr.; after spending the past 8 years apart, they finally reunited just in time for Christmas.

On August 21st 1934, Shangy was born in Carson Co, Panhandle TX to Carl Newton and Millie Shankle. She graduated Panhandle High School in 1952. In 1955, she moved to Galveston TX to live with her aunt, Minnie Mae Mullen. Shortly after, she met Archiebald. In August of 1956, they became husband and wife, hosting a small ceremony in Galveston Methodist Church. In 1957 they relocated to Texas City, TX.

Shangy was a devout Christian who spent her life putting her faith first. Throughout the years she made several churches home, the most recent being Heights Baptist (Now New Life Fellowship) in Texas City, TX. She was a Sunday school teacher for various churches throughout La Marque and Texas City. She eventually went on to be a full time Kindergarten teacher at Heights Christian School. After retiring, she enjoyed crocheting afghans and scrapbooking.

She was a proud wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved watching her family grow and loved even more having the whole family together. When family visited, she always had her camera out documenting every moment. She shared stories of her past and childhood memories with passion and detail. It made you feel like you were in the moment with her. Visits with Shangy/Mom/Grandma had you leaving better than you came.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Millie Newton, her sister Donna Richardson, her brother Howard Newton and her husband, Archiebald Voight Jr.

She is survived by her children, Archie Lee III, Gregory, Stanley (Carol) Voight, and Ron (Evelyn) Vaughn; grandchildren Crystal Morgan, Tiffani Worth, Megan Voight-Sellers, Meriah Voight, Micah Voight, Marisa Voight, Britney Voight and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Due to Shangy's wish as well as the current pandemic, there will not be a public memorial.
