Paul Brindley of Tiki Island/Galveston TX passed away peacefully on August 27, 2020.

Born in Cameron, Texas to Elaine Wright Brindley and Dr. Claunch Brindley, Paul grew up in Houston attending Lamar High School where he exceled in the classroom and on the golf course. In keeping with the family tradition, he went on to UTMB Galveston where he graduated in 1965 and completed his internship and residency in Otolaryngology in 1970 (he would tell people he picked noses for a living).  He served two years as a Major in the US Army at William Beaumont General Hospital at Fort Bliss – El Paso TX. Upon completion of his service, he established himself in private practice at Houston ENT Clinic. After almost 40 years at Houston ENT Clinic he returned in 2010 to UTMB to serve on the faculty and continued to practice until his retirement in 2018. Paul had a passion and dedication to medicine, being a doctor, and mentoring residents and interns.

Work hard, play hard applied to Paul.  He loved many hobbies, most of them outdoors and all of them with family and many friends.  Golf, hunting, camping, sailing (racing at Houston Yacht Club, then cruising), fishing (bay and offshore), football games (Longhorns, Oilers, Texans), cooking, and entertaining. There were epic road trips for hunting, skiing, and backpacking, eventful week-long Gulf crossings on a sailboat to Veracruz and Key West, and then there were the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo BBQ Cookoffs.  For over 20 years, Paul led the Cold River team (really another family) at the BBQ cookoff, winning various Championships and once coaching a few younger members to a win in the Bloody Mary contest. Not only were the Cookoff weeks full of smoke and fun (mischief), for many years they raised funds and sponsored experiences for the Sunshine Kids and Small Steps programs. His homes and boats were always a gathering place – filled with stocked coolers, music, and routine carrying-on.

He instilled a strong work ethic in his four sons, set an example of how to be a great friend, a kind human being to all, to have fun and not take things, or yourself, too seriously.  He leaves behind many friends and family who will miss him deeply, including his wife Tammy and son Will, first wife Mary Gayle and sons Paul Jr (Jill), Mitch (Dawn), Hans (Lauren), and grandchildren Chace, Paul III, Pierce, Josie, John Charles, Luke, and Rhett.  He is also survived by his brother Dr. Mace Brindley (Trisha) and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his brother Dr. Bethea Brindley (Mary Ellen). In his final days, he was comforted, and the family touched, by the care of his hospice team and his friend Lois Halfin, and visits from old and new friends alike.  A special thank you to the Tiki Island community who have supported Paul and the family though his illness.
