Spiro Pappas

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Spiro J. Pappas into the loving arms of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Born in 1935 in Kiaton, Greece, Spiro immigrated to the United States with his family in 1946. From a young age, he worked tirelessly on various jobs in New York City, developing the relentless work ethic that would define his life. A proud immigrant, his earliest memory was gazing at Lady Liberty from the deck of the ship bringing him to his new home in America.

As a boy, Spiro and his family endured the Axis occupation of Greece and the hardships that followed with the Greek Civil War. He knew hunger and near starvation, experiences that stayed with him throughout his life and deepened his love for America and the freedoms she offered.

Spiro is survived by his wife Harriet and the two just celebrated their 65th anniversary. In 1972, they moved their young family to Houston and founded Dreyfus Construction where their family and business thrived. Through hard work, strong faith, and steadfast devotion to each other, their marriage became a shining example to family and friends alike.

Spiro embodied the American Dream, his dedication, perseverance, and faith were rewarded with a successful family and business life. He served his Church as a prior board President, community, and friends with tremendous energy and spirit. Always loud, brash, and the life of the party. His passions included hunting, fishing, trail rides with the Tejas Vaqueros, Aggie football, sailing, wine making, and tending to his 40 acre pecan orchard.

Spiro had no "filter" but possessed a boundless heart. He was a bear of a man with a heart of gold. He held malice to no man.

Recently, his family gathered to celebrate his 90th birthday in grand fashion. After bravely battling the tolls of age and illness, Spiro peacefully passed surrounded by his family.

Spiro is survived by his beloved wife, Harriet; his sons Jim and wife Stephanie, Andrew and wife Julie, and Michael and wife Laura; grandchildren Samantha and husband Johnny, Page, Spiro Wilson and wife Hayley, Christopher Michael and wife Charlotte, Nicholas Michael, and Patrick Michael; great-grandson River James; and two more great-grandchildren expected in the coming months.

The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and caregivers at M.D. Anderson and to all the exceptional medical professionals who cared for Spiro. Their compassion and skill meant everything to us.

His funeral will be held at St. Basil's Greek Orthodox Church, 1100 Eldridge, Houston, Texas on October 22nd, with Father Luke Palumbis officiating. Visitation will be at 10 am, Service at 11 with a celebration of life following immediately at the Church.  The family will then depart for a private burial.
