DICKINSON, TX — William E. (Bill) Bumpus, age 82, passed away peacefully at home on July 17, 2025. Bill grew up in Newark, NY, but moved to Texas to attend the University of Houston. Soon he moved to Galveston to begin a career in data processing. In 1972, he married Patricia (Pat) Jones and became a loving father to her daughter Robin Jones and son George (Butch) Jones. They loved RVing, starting out in a VW camper van and gradually increasing the RV sizes to 40 feet by the time the "kids" had families of their own. After more than 30 years serving in the data processing department at the University of Texas Medical Branch, he retired and could indulge his interest in classic cars. He even owned an old Jaguar long enough to realize it was a money pit to maintain. When younger, he served First Presbyterian Church of Galveston on the Building and Grounds Committee and still had callouses on his knees and elbows from crawling through the rafters and beneath the floors. As part of a church ministry, he helped restore the kitchen at the Salvation Army and served meals there for many years. He also enjoyed delivering Meals on Wheels as a First Presbyterian team member. He and Pat continued RVing throughout the remainder of his life. He is survived by his wife Pat, his daughter Robin Jones McMahan, and his son George Jones, son-in-law Mike McMahan, 6 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Galveston on Saturday, July 26 at 2:00 pm. The service will be livestreamed on the website at www.galvpres.net. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either Salvation Army of Galveston (meal service) or Galveston Island Meals on Wheels.
